Below are two examples of manufacturing engineering projects SGW Designworks consulted on, resulting in tangible benefits for the client.
- SGW Designworks was contacted by the client to develop a one-off machine for testing of locomotive trucks. The machine needed to be mobile, easy to operate by staff, and be operational within twenty days. The SGW team immediately developed three conceptual approaches and met with he client to select the best option. Engineering and design immediately ensued, quickly followed by fabrication. SGW Designworks sourced all required components, fabricated the system, delivered the finished machine, tested on-site, debugged, and trained the client's staff for safe operation. The machine was delivered on time, and under budget.
- The SGW team worked within a large corporate development group to fully develop a new proprietary manufacturing line for a complex product. The system included material processing, lean material conveyance, adhesive application, and automated assembly. The project included not only the design and engineering of the various machine centers, but also full integration and controls, startup, and de-bugging. The facility had severe space limitations, so creative approaches to material flow and inventory was required. While many of the machines in the production line were custom designed, commercially available components were used wherever possible to control the overall system cost. The manufacturing system that resulted from this project contained a number of trade secrets which gave the manufacturer a significant competitive advantage.
