Mock Models and Looks-Like Prototypes

Some design questions can only be answered by holding the product. Size, weight, grip, and proportion often feel different in hand than they look on a screen. Mock models put a physical version of the design in front of your team and your users early, while changes are still easy. SGW builds mock models ranging from quick foam and printed forms to detailed looks-like models that represent the final appearance. We use them to evaluate form and ergonomics, compare concepts side by side, and gather feedback before investing in functional prototypes. For Tobi, SGW built an early mockup of a touchless hand sanitizing unit using custom components, then conducted UI and UX testing of its overall aesthetic and electronics. That testing gave the client insight into which features to include in the working prototype.

What mock models help you evaluate

  • Overall size and proportion
  • Grip, reach, and ergonomics
  • Placement of controls and displays
  • Appearance and finish options
  • User reactions to competing concepts

Looks-like before works-like

Mock models answer appearance and ergonomic questions quickly, so functional prototypes can focus on performance. Models are also used in user testing and complement renderings.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mock model and a prototype?

A mock model shows how a product looks and feels. A functional prototype proves how it works.

What are mock models made from?

Materials range from foam and 3D printed parts for quick studies to finished models that represent the final appearance.

Can mock models be used with users?

Yes. They are a fast way to get user feedback on size, form, and ergonomics.

When should we build mock models?

Early, once concepts are defined and before functional prototypes and tooling.
