Rugged Product Development

We design products that survive shock, vibration, water, dust, and extreme temperatures, built for the environments where failure is not an option. Our work covers ruggedized electronics, sealed enclosures, vehicle-mounted displays and controls, industrial handhelds, and ground support equipment, designed to ratings like IP69 and MIL-STD-810. Rugged products fail at their weakest point, and that is usually where electronics, seals, and structure meet. Connectors loosen under vibration, boards flex on impact, and condensation finds its way into sealed housings. We design the electronics and the structure around them together, so component selection, board mounting, sealing, and thermal management all support the same durability target. Every program starts with a clear picture of the environment: the shock, vibration, temperature, moisture, and handling conditions the product will see in the field, and the standards it has to meet. From there we select materials and architectures, use FEA and thermal analysis to find weak points before the first prototype, and plan environmental testing with qualified labs. The result is hardware that holds up in the field and can still be built efficiently, with documentation and supplier support that carry rugged performance through to production.

Designing for product durability and ruggedization is a specialty.

Our team blends creative design with domain expertise to build physically robust products.

Ruggedized electronics

Electronics are usually the weakest point in a rugged product. Connectors loosen under vibration, boards flex on impact, and condensation finds its way into sealed housings. We design the electronics and the structure around them together, so component selection, board mounting, and cable routing all support the durability target.

‍

It starts with a clear picture of the environment: the shock, vibration, temperature, moisture, and handling conditions the product will see in the field. From there we choose architectures that deliver that protection without adding unnecessary weight or cost.

Ruggedized enclosures

The enclosure is the first line of defense. We design sealing systems, mounting strategies, and structures that keep electronics dry, clean, and secure. Simulation and analysis help us find weak points before the first prototype is built.

‍

We also design for the people using the product, with gloved operation, interfaces that stay readable in bright sun, and components that can be serviced in the field.

‍

IP Ratings and MIL-STD Ratings

Rugged claims have to be backed by test results. IP (Ingress Protection) ratings define how well an enclosure keeps out dust and water, from splash resistance up to submersion and high-pressure washdown. MIL-STD-810 defines lab test methods for conditions like shock, vibration, temperature extremes, humidity, and blowing sand and dust.

‍

We identify which ratings and test methods apply to your product early, design to them from the start, and support testing with qualified labs. Once the design is validated, we prepare full manufacturing documentation and support your suppliers through production.

"These guys get it. They are a rare blend of creative and technical talent. Honest, flexible, fun to work with and incredibly competent. As a designer, they make me look good, bringing my ideas to life through their insight and experience."

Preston Lewis, Co-Founder & CCO

"I have worked with the team at SGW on a handful of projects, and I continue to be impressed with the depth and breadth of talent and capabilities they bring to the table. SGW is easy to work with, competent, and they operate with integrity. They make you want to do more business with them. Highly recommend!"

David Sheehan, Engineering Manager

"The team at SGW Designworks was able to identify and test multiple solutions to a complex development challenge in a short period of time, then carry those findings over to a full development effort. This had a real impact on the speed of our development project."
