project summary

SGW Designworks helped LANDR develop a prototype and design package for their contact lens case, connected them with a trusted manufacturing partner, and provided engineering support through production.

Challenge

Product Vision

LANDR needed product development experts to help turn a prototype into a mass-produced product.

The client envisioned a contact lens case that matched the sleek aesthetics of travel cosmetic products while providing 100% leak proof functionality. She also wanted to disrupt an industry norm: typically, contact lens cases are considered disposable, with users throwing them away after a month or so of use. This new product would be durable, cleanable, and re-useable (pending FDA approval). She came with a metal prototype that needed to be converted to a light-weight injection molded plastic design for ease of use and manufacturability.

The SGW Team of mechanical engineers and industrial designers concepted around the original design to convert to a new manufacturing process while keeping the central aesthetics and improving the seal and user experience of the product. Special attention went in to ensuring that the device would be clean-able, maximizing likelihood of FDA approval for re-use. An iterative prototyping cycle led to a detailed design package for the FDA class II medical device.

Final Outcome

SGW Designworks took LANDR’s contact lens case from proof-of-concept prototype to manufactured product.

The project involved a redesign of a one-off milled prototype to an injection molded design that would pass FDA testing. This involved a full mechanical design effort that started with concepting improvements to the user experience of the prototype. Iterative prototyping using SGW’s in-house 3D printing capability and some regulatory research led to a leak-proof and manufacturable prototype that a design package was created around. SGW leveraged its manufacturing network to find a suitable manufacturing partner that they worked closely with to ensure the final product and packaging was produced to the client’s satisfaction.

Sixteen months after kicking off with SGW, LANDR has received their first product run of 50 samples to complete FDA testing with before launching their innovative new contact lens case on the market.

In Q2 2025, the LANDR Sustainable Contact Lens Case was awarded a NY Product Design Award for innovation in the Sustainable Products category.

Project testimonial

What the client said.

“Going into this, I honestly had no idea of how to turn a concept into a marketable product. I think following my gut and ditching the previous engineer to sign on with SGW was one of the better decisions I've made during this process. I'm still learning as I go but SGW really simplified the process for me. You guys have been great at putting concepts into layman's terms and acting independently enough that I can still perform at my real full time job.”
