Injection Molded Part Design

Injection molding can make strong, precise, low-cost parts at volume, but only when the parts are designed for it. Uneven walls cause sink and warp, missing draft causes tooling problems, and poorly planned joints make assemblies hard to build. Fixing these issues after the tool is cut is slow and expensive. SGW designs plastic parts with molding in mind from the first concept. We select resins for strength, temperature, chemical, and UV requirements, then define wall thickness, ribs, bosses, draft, and snap fits or fastened joints that produce consistent parts and simple assembly. Our molded part work ranges from consumer products to heavy-duty equipment. We converted a metal contact lens case prototype into a lightweight molded design for LANDR, and engineered a large injection molded tread drive for pivot irrigation that carries massive loads at low production cost.

What we design for

  • Uniform walls, ribs, and bosses that resist sink and warp
  • Draft, parting lines, and features that simplify tooling
  • Snap fits, ultrasonic welds, overmolding, and fastened joints
  • Resin selection for strength, temperature, chemical, and UV exposure
  • Tolerance stack-ups for parts that have to seal or align

Working with your molder

We review designs with your molder or a molder from our network, respond to design-for-manufacturing feedback, and support tooling reviews and first article inspection. That keeps the path from CAD to good parts as short as possible. Our manufacturing setup support continues through production.

Molded parts in sealed and rugged products

Many molded housings also have to seal, survive impact, or pass RF signals. We combine molded part design with enclosure sealing and shock and vibration analysis where products need it. Molded part design is part of our mechanical engineering services.

Frequently asked questions

Can you convert a machined or 3D printed prototype into a molded part?

Yes. We redesign parts for molding while keeping the features that matter, which often reduces cost and weight.

Do you make the molds?

No. We design the parts and work with your molder or a molder we recommend, and we support tooling reviews and first articles.

What volumes make sense for injection molding?

It depends on part size, complexity, and tooling cost. For lower volumes we can discuss alternatives such as lower-cost tooling, urethane casting, or machined parts.

Can you help reduce part count or cost on an existing molded product?

Yes. We review existing designs for part consolidation, simpler tooling, and assembly improvements.
