Handheld Device Design

A handheld device has to feel right in the hand, survive being dropped, and pack electronics, a battery, buttons, and often a display into a tight space. Every one of those requirements competes for the same volume, so the industrial design, mechanical engineering, and electronics have to be developed together. SGW designs handheld devices from early ergonomic studies through production. We study how people hold and use the device, define the layout of controls and displays, and engineer the housing, internal structure, and sealing so the product is comfortable, durable, and practical to assemble. For LodeStar Works, SGW fit a three-button keypad, fingerprint reader, Bluetooth electronics, and a battery within the existing volume of a full-frame handgun, using user studies to locate the controls. We also design rugged docks, cradles, and adapters with Portsmith that support enterprise handheld computers in demanding environments.

What we design for

  • Grip, weight, balance, and control placement
  • Drop and impact durability
  • Sealing for outdoor and washdown use
  • Battery capacity and charging within a compact volume
  • Displays, buttons, and feedback that work with gloves and in bright light

Electronics in a small space

Handheld products leave little room for error. We develop the board outline, battery, and housing together, and apply low-power design to stretch battery life without adding size. Molded housings benefit from our injection molded part design experience.

Rugged and specialized handhelds

Many handhelds work in tough environments. We design for drops, sealing, and gloved use, and bring the same thinking to vehicle displays and HMIs. Handheld device design is part of our product design services.

Frequently asked questions

Can you design the electronics as well as the housing?

Yes. Our mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers develop the device together, which avoids conflicts between the housing and the boards inside.

How do you test ergonomics?

We build looks-like models and prototypes early and put them in users' hands, then refine grip, weight, and control placement based on feedback.

Can you design accessories such as docks and chargers?

Yes. We design docks, cradles, adapters, and chargers, including rugged accessories for enterprise handheld computers.

Do you design for drop testing?

Yes. We design housings and internal structures for drop and impact and support testing to your requirements.
