Power Electronics Design

Power design decides whether a product runs cool, efficiently, and safely, and whether it passes emissions testing. Converters, regulators, protection circuits, and battery systems all have to be chosen and laid out with heat, noise, and the enclosure in mind. SGW's electrical engineers design power circuits for battery-powered and line-powered products. We size and select converters and regulators, design input protection and power sequencing, and lay out power stages to manage current paths, heat, and switching noise. Because power circuits generate heat, we design them alongside the mechanical team. Component placement, copper, heat spreaders, and conduction paths into the housing are worked out together, so the electronics stay within limits inside a sealed or compact enclosure.

What our power design covers

  • DC-DC conversion and voltage regulation
  • Input protection, filtering, and power sequencing
  • Battery charging and power path circuits
  • Power distribution for LEDs, sensors, and peripherals

Layout, heat, and noise

Power stages are among the hardest parts of a board to lay out well. We plan current loops, grounding, and copper for low noise and good thermal performance as part of our PCB design and layout work, and coordinate with thermal management so heat has somewhere to go.

Designing for compliance

Switching power supplies are a common source of emissions problems. We design with filtering and layout practices that reduce emissions and run FCC and CE pre-compliance testing in house before formal testing at accredited labs. Power design is part of our electrical engineering services.

Frequently asked questions

Do you design custom power supplies?

We design power circuits on the product's own boards, including conversion, regulation, protection, and battery charging. For standalone supplies, we often select a certified off-the-shelf unit and design around it.

Can you help extend battery life?

Yes. Power architecture and component selection have a large effect on battery life, and we treat power as a system budget from the start.

Do you handle high-voltage designs?

Tell us your voltages and power levels and we will let you know whether the work fits our experience.

How do you keep power electronics cool in a sealed enclosure?

We design conduction paths from hot components into the housing, use copper and heat spreaders on the board, and choose enclosure materials with thermal performance in mind.
