Sheet Metal and Weldment Design

Sheet metal and weldments are the backbone of a lot of equipment and rugged products. They can be strong, light, and cost-effective at low to mid volumes, but only when bends, flanges, holes, and welds are designed around how the parts will actually be cut, formed, and joined. SGW designs fabricated parts and assemblies, from formed enclosures and brackets to welded frames and structures. We use geometry to create stiffness where it is needed, minimize material and weld length, and define tolerances and datums your fabricator can hold consistently. For Correct Cut, we chose sheet steel as the primary material for a collapsible miter saw stand and developed geometry that provides stiffness where needed and low weight throughout. For Sloan Security Group, we designed a stainless steel bollard cover with integrated lighting and helped set up its supply chain.

What we design

  • Formed enclosures, covers, and panels
  • Brackets, mounts, and chassis
  • Welded frames and structural assemblies
  • Stainless and aluminum parts for outdoor and washdown environments
  • Hybrid assemblies that combine fabricated, machined, and molded parts

Design for fabrication

We design with bend radii, relief, hole-to-edge distances, weld access, and distortion in mind, and we use self-fixturing features such as tabs and slots to make assembly faster and more repeatable. Where loads are significant, we verify the design with structural analysis before parts are cut.

Documentation your fabricator can build from

We deliver flat patterns, drawings, weld callouts, and BOMs, and support your fabricator through first builds. This work supports our agricultural equipment design and industrial product development projects, and is part of our mechanical engineering services.

Frequently asked questions

When is sheet metal a better choice than injection molding?

Usually at lower volumes, for larger parts, or where strength, heat, or conductivity matter. We help you compare options against your volumes and cost targets.

Can you work with our existing fabricator?

Yes. We design to your fabricator's equipment and capabilities and coordinate with them during prototyping and first builds.

Do you design welded frames for heavy equipment?

Yes. We design welded frames and structures and use analysis to verify strength and stiffness.

Can you reduce the cost of an existing fabricated assembly?

Often. We look for part consolidation, simpler bends, shorter welds, and fewer fasteners.
