Electromechanical Systems Design

Many products depend on mechanisms and electronics working together: a motor that has to deliver torque on demand, a sensor that has to read a moving part, a user input that drives a mechanical response. When the mechanical and electrical sides are designed separately, problems show up at integration, often late and expensively. SGW designs electromechanical systems with our mechanical, electrical, and firmware engineers on the same team. We select motors, actuators, drivetrains, sensors, and encoders, design the mechanisms around them, and develop the electronics and embedded control so the whole system meets its performance, size, and cost targets. For Voltaire, we developed a small, efficient drivetrain for the high torque of grinding, an intuitive interface built around a rotary encoder, and the electronics and firmware behind it. For SurgiStep, a height-adjustable stool for surgeons, our work included mechanism design, PCBA engineering, and firmware development.

What we integrate

  • Motors, actuators, and drivetrains
  • Sensors, encoders, and limit detection
  • Lift, positioning, and locking mechanisms
  • User inputs, displays, and feedback
  • Control electronics and embedded firmware

One team across disciplines

Our mechanical engineers work alongside our electrical and firmware engineers, so motor selection, sensor placement, wiring, and control logic are decided together. Inside the housing, we apply electronics packaging practices to route cables and mount boards so moving parts and electronics coexist reliably.

Prototype, test, refine

Electromechanical systems benefit from early, functional prototypes. We build and test working units to tune performance and find problems before tooling. This work is part of our mechanical engineering services and supports our machine design projects.

Frequently asked questions

Do you develop the control firmware?

Yes. Our firmware engineers develop embedded software for motor control, sensing, and user interfaces. Cloud platforms and mobile apps are typically developed by your team or a software partner.

Can you help choose motors and actuators?

Yes. We size and select motors, actuators, and drivetrains based on torque, speed, duty cycle, power budget, and cost.

Do you develop custom sensors?

We integrate available sensors into products and design the mechanisms and electronics around them. We do not develop new sensor technologies.

Can you work with an existing mechanism or board?

Yes. We can design around existing components or rework them to improve performance, reliability, or cost.
